Arsenal Awards $5,400 in College Scholarship
Five local high school students who successfully balanced academics, extracurricular activities and community involvement earned college scholarships from Arsenal Credit Union (Arnold) this year.
The top winner, Megan Rashe (Westminster Christian Academy), earned $1,500. Two students – Matthew Gal (Bishop DuBourg High School) and Alaina Youngstrom (Brentwood High School) – each received $1,200 scholarships, while Samantha Halfmann (Rosati-Kain High School) and Kelly Hacker (Columbia High School in Illinois) each were awarded $750.
All were recognized at the credit union’s annual meeting.
Over the past 16 years, Arsenal has awarded a total of $45,150 to 55 students.
Writing and submitting a short essay has always been an important part of the scholarship application and judging process at the credit union.
“This year we decided to do something different and give students the option of picking from two topics,” noted Jenny Remes, marketing coordinator at Arsenal. “About half of our applicants chose to write about what makes credit unions special and how we’ve helped them and their family, while the other half covered why financial education and financial literacy are important to them and society. We plan to continue offering this option.”Photo Caption: (L-R): Kelly Hacker, Alaina Youngstrom, Matthew Gal, Megan Rashe, and Samantha Halfmann
