120+ Kansas, Missouri Credit Union Advocates at CUNA GAC

U.S Rep. Ron Estes with the HCUA group after speaking at our reception in the U.S. Capitol.

It's been quite the week for more than 120 Kansas and Missouri credit union leaders attending CUNA’s Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC) - and it’s not over yet.

Attendees are wrapping up two days of Capitol Hill visits to all 16 members of the Missouri and Kansas Congressional delegations, including S. 2155 cosponsors Senator Jerry Moran (R), Senator Claire McCaskill (D) and Senator Roy Blunt (R).  S. 2155 is the regulatory relief bill moving forward in the U.S. Senate, with key provisions that help credit unions.

Before taking the credit union message to Capitol Hill, our attendees enjoyed a welcome reception for HCUA-member credit unions and an exclusive event in the U.S. Capitol’s historic Mansfield Room. Located just outside the Senate chambers, attendees saw parts of the U.S. Capitol that many do not get to visit.

U.S. Rep. Ron Estes (R-KS District 4) addressed the group, while representatives from the office of U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-MO District 3) also visited during the reception. Rep. Estes then took a large group on a night tour of the U.S. Capitol, including a visit to the U.S. House floor.

On top of all of the HCUA events and lawmaker visits, our president/CEO Brad Douglas addressed the GAC in welcoming U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-MO District 3) to the conference on Wednesday morning. Luetkemeyer shared his focus on needed regulatory reform and his intent to introduce data security legislation.

Kansas and Missouri attendees also heard from former U.S. President George W. Bush, learned about the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB)'s goals for the future and were represented by one of our Board members, Lisa Ginter, in a small group discussion with U.S. President Donald Trump regarding regulatory relief for credit unions. CUNA also unveiled a plan for a credit union awareness initiative

In addition to the focus on regulatory relief during Capitol Hill visits, other issues being discussed include:

  • data security (here's a letter challenging retailer opposition to data security efforts)
  • the credit union tax status
  • Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) funding
  • ADA litigation/need for clarification of requirements
  • MLA and its impact on existing loans
