St. Louis Area CUs Come Together in Support of MO Senate Candidate Hummel

More than 20 leaders, staff and volunteers from five St. Louis area credit unions joined together in support of Missouri Senate District 4 candidate Jacob Hummel (D) during a reception hosted by Anheuser-Busch Employees' Credit Union (ABECU). Representatives from ABECU, First Community Credit Union, First Missouri Credit Union, Heartland Credit Union Association and St. Louis Community Credit Union attended the event, held at ABECU's headquarters on October 26.

Participants who attended the reception say the event was a great opportunity to show support for a credit union member who is running for the Missouri Senate. Hummel is a long-time member of ABECU.

"We were excited to host the event for Representative Hummel," says Bob McKay, president and CEO of ABECU. "He has been a member of ABECU for years and has a good understanding of credit union issues. This was a great opportunity to hear directly from him and make sure he understands our perspective."

"Our credit union appreciated the opportunity to host State Senate candidate Jake Hummel," adds Larry Sewell, vice president of corporate partnerships and advocacy for ABECU. "An important part of ABECU's core purpose is to support the communities that we serve. Meeting with Jake helped underscore our efforts within the community, and also communicate legislative priorities and concerns ahead of the 2017 legislative session."

“It’s always interesting to discuss issues with a member of the state legislature, especially in district," says Mike O'Brien from St. Louis Community Credit Union, who attended the event. "Jake is one of our own. He’s a long-time credit union member and has been a champion for our industry over the years. He deserves our support in return.”

Participants also took an opportunity to ask questions on a wide range of topics, including on issues facing credit unions in the St. Louis area.

"Jake displayed an understanding on a wide range of issues that impact the St. Louis region, and specifically demonstrated his understanding of credit union issues," says Charlie Waalkes, volunteer for ABECU. "It will be a great benefit to have such a strong voice in the Missouri Senate."

Hummel is running for Senate District 4 in a Special Election on November 8. He was first elected to the Missouri House of Representatives in 2008, and served as Minority Leader since 2013. There are approximately 49,000 credit union members in Senate District 4, which represents parts of St. Louis City and St. Louis County.
