Found on Facebook: Credit Unions Supporting Local Schools

We're amazed (daily) by our member credit unions - and credit union members. This week's Facebook news feed revealed three great stories about how credit unions support local schools. Read on!

Girls Use Birthday Party to Help 1st Financial Federal Credit Union's School Supply Drive

Two little girls with big hearts, Kenley and her friend, Evelyn, recently saw 1st Financial Federal Credit Union gather school supplies for local children and decided to help.

1st Financial partnered with KidSmart Tools for Learning in the month of August to raise awareness, volunteer, and host school supply drives throughout the St. Louis area. The credit union also offered a grant of $505 and received generous donations of school supplies from members and employees.

One young member decided to do something very unique to help KidSmart and 1st Financial with their efforts.

Kenley, a 5-year-old member of 1st Financial, capitalized on an upcoming birthday party, which she was sharing and hosting with her friend, Evelyn, by asking her guests to bring a donation of school supplies in lieu of gifts. When Kenley was asked why she wanted to host the school supply drive, she stated, “I wanted to help kids who didn’t have stuff for school. Kids need stuff to help them learn.”

Kenley's mother, Kacie Alexander is an executive assistant at 1st Financial.

“As an employee, I am proud to be part of an organization that empowers and encourages us to make a difference in the communities we serve," said Kacie. "As a member, I appreciate the opportunity to not only teach my daughter important financial skills through the CUbby Kids Club program but also the importance of giving back and helping others. For our family, being a part of 1st Financial is rewarding on so many levels.”

Central Kansas Education Credit Union Provides Grants to Kansas Schools

Trena Lackey, of Central Kansas Education Credit Union, recently presented two grants to benefit Kansas schools.

On August 11, she presented Sean Keasling and Unified School District 306 - Southeast of Saline with a grant for the year.

A few weeks later, Trena presented Dana Sprinkle and Elementary School Family Groups with a grant.

Central Kansas Education Credit Union, formerly Saline County Teachers Credit Union, serves school employees in Saline County and the surrounding counties of Dickinson, Ellsworth, McPherson, and Ottawa.

First Community Credit Union Teaches Students Money Basics

St. Theodore School, in Wentzville, MO, recently shared a video of First Community Credit Union's community education specialist, Kelly, teaching financial basics to first graders.

Kelly visited the class on September 12. She covered a number of topics including what money is and how to save money. The class even participated in an exercise to show how people got by before financial institutions - trading good and services!

First Community provides classroom presentations to local schools regularly.
