Found on Facebook: Credit Unions Giving Back to Their Communities

We're amazed (daily) by all of the ways credit unions give back to their communities. Scrolling through our Facebook news feed, we found several credit unions that deserve the spotlight for their efforts. Read below!

Credit Union of America (Wichita, KS)

The staff of Credit Union of America has been busy! Recently, they took the time to donate blood to the Red Cross. The next week, several staffers participated in the Kidzcope Good Grief 5K and Kids Run on Labor Day, September 5. The credit union also helped sponsor the event.

Proceeds will be used to advance the mission of Kidzcope, a non-profit, non-affiliated organization that provides support and a comforting environment for grieving children and their families. It's the only organization of its kind in south central Kansas. Volunteers lead group activities and through play and art therapy children learn there is hope after the loss of a loved one.

River Region Credit Union (Jefferson City, MO)

River Region Credit Union called on its employees and members to help support local law enforcement agencies - Cole County Sheriff's Department, Jefferson City Police Department and Missouri State Highway Patrol. They collected food, snacks, water and other items for these agencies (pictured at right).

The credit union presented each agency with a $500 check and these donations.

St. Louis Community Credit Union (St. Louis, MO)

St. Louis Public Radio recently highlighted the positive impact of St. Louis Community Credit Union, especially the Gateway branch. This is St. Louis Community Credit Union’s thirteenth branch located in a high poverty area. A fourteenth is under construction in south St. Louis near Benton Park.

“It’s really a good asset to the neighborhood,” said Allison Carson, owner of AAA Fish House, which is near the Gateway branch. “We have a bunch of senior citizens that don’t have cars. We have a low-income building that’s right across the street there, and it makes it easier for them to go over there and cash their checks.”

The Gateway branch is located at the Gateway Bank's old address, which previously served this area, closing in 2012. St. Louis Community will continue Gateway Bank's mission by opening branches in low-income neighborhoods and offering people chances to build wealth and good credit.

United Credit Union (Mexico, MO)

For the past several years, United Credit Union has hosted "Pack the Bus" drives for school supplies. Each one of their six branches participated - Columbia, Fulton, Mexico, Moberly, Troy and Vandalia,

Credit union staffers from the Vandalia branch, Heather and Charla, delivered the school supplies they collected to Brian Hummel, the principal at Van-Far Elementary. They are pictured at right.
