Awards Can Boost Your Credibility

We all use traditional marketing and communications tactics to rise above the competition. You place ads, write press releases, tweet, post to Instagram, attend networking events, just to name a few. But there’s one approach that you might have overlooked.

Awards.

Winning an industry or company award doesn’t just “happen.” Other people or businesses do not nominate your organization…it is up to YOU to get that recognition!

CUNA’s recognition awards are a way to showcase your tireless efforts in your community and your dedication to your members.

Deadline to enter is July 1. 

  • Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award recognizes credit union efforts to strengthen local institutions and materially improve the lives of nonmembers through community outreach programs (other than personal finance education).
  • Louise Herring Philosophy in Action Member Service Award recognizes credit union efforts to materially improve members’ lives through programs (other than personal finance education).
  • Desjardins YOUTH and ADULT Financial Education Award recognizes credit union efforts to teach personal finance concepts and skills to members and nonmembers.

What is holding you back? Do any of these sound familiar? 

My credit union is small…I’ll never win.
The awards are based on asset size, so if you are small, you are not competing with larger organizations.

It takes too much effort.
Yes, it does take time to fill out the form, gather materials and write up your entry. But this exercise isn’t just useful for winning awards. It forces you to think about your program in relation to budget, challenges and results. Once you do it, you can use this information for other marketing objectives. And now that the award submission process is online, it's easier than ever to enter.

Everyone else is doing way cooler things…
There may be some awesome programs created by other credit unions. But did they enter? Maybe, maybe not. Kansas and Missouri credit unions are doing great work too, and how do you know if you don’t enter in the first place?

This is your chance to show the industry, your community, and your credit union’s staff that what you do matters. Your efforts are changing the lives of your members, neighbors and your community.  

Yeah, but it’s not in the budget.
That may be true, but it's only $25 to enter these awards!

After you submit your entry, all entries are sent to another state’s League/Association for judging. Those entries that meet the criteria for a first place state winner, are then sent to CUNA for national judging. 

There’s a lot of competition out there for financial institutions. Differentiate your credit union as a leader and increase your PR efforts too…winning awards garners free press nationally and within in your community.

Once you win an award, don’t just clap and forget about it. Leverage the honor on your website and through social media and position your credit union as an “expert” to media and your community.
