Kansas, Missouri Credit Unions Celebrate Youth Month

Kansas and Missouri credit unions celebrated National Credit Union Youth Month (April) with fun and educational activities for their youngest members. This year's theme, Credit Union Strong – Pump Up Your Savings, played a large part in credit unions' promotions and marketing materials.

Check out how Farmway Credit Union, First Community Credit Union and Members 1st Credit Union encouraged youngsters to develop healthy financial habits.

Farmway Credit Union (Beloit, KS)

Credit Union Youth Week was celebrated April 18-22 at all four Farmway Credit Union locations.

Prior to Youth Week, Farmway employees visited several classes at St John’s Grade School and Beloit Elementary School, educating students on saving money and promoting FCU’s “Cash for Grades” program and the upcoming Youth Week activities.

Kids who visited the credit union during Youth Week were invited to play a game to win money, and they were encouraged to deposit their winnings into their savings account. All participants were given a choice of a Farmway Credit Union t-shirt or jump rope and enjoyed trail mix and a bottle of water.

A total of eight $25 Visa Gift Cards were given away as grand prizes.

First Community Credit Union (Chesterfield, MO)

First Community celebrated National Credit Union Youth Month at all branch locations during the month of April. First Community members with a Rising Stars Youth Account had a chance to win a prize (valued at $300). To enter, they completed scorecards - members received points on the card for making deposits, exercising and writing letters to First Community mascot Louie Loan Star. Members that completed the scorecards earned a prize and were entered into a grand prize drawing valued at $300.

“Our youth members are really important to us,” says Glenn D. Barks, First Community president/CEO. “They are the future of our business, and we commit a lot of our resources to them.”

To kick off the month-long celebration, First Community employees held a costume contest. Branches were encouraged to dress like their favorite athlete, team or sports-themed movie to promote the theme of being strong. Entries included "Dodgeball," "Caddyshack" and the Harlem Globetrotters (pictured at right). The winning departments received prizes and the entire staff had fun with the event.

The Rising S.T.A.R.S. Club is for children age 12 and under. The club encourages smart savings habits, school performance and promotes financial responsibility. Members receive custom-made club materials featuring Louie the Loan Star. They receive stickers and prizes for saving, invitations to events just for them and $1 for getting As on their report card!

Members 1st Credit Union (St. Louis, MO)

During the month of April, Members 1st Credit Union deposited $5 into any new youth accounts that were opened. Existing youth members received $1 for every $20 they deposited (max received was $5). They were also entered into a drawing for a $25 VISA gift card from each office.

The credit union's Facebook page also celebrated the young members who made deposits during the month. Members 1st staffers embraced the pump-it-up theme and made sweet "dumbells" for their young members.
