Meet Heartland Credit Union Association’s New Leader

If Josh Lyman of “The West Wing” was a concert level pianist, sports and fitness nut who loved to travel with his family, you’ve met Brad Douglas, our new president/CEO.

Some may already know of him, as he was involved with CommunityAmercia Credit Union’s (Lenexa, KS) Board of Directors for 10 years, serving as Chairman for four of those years.  In addition to credit unions, his background includes everything from governmental relations to communications and business development. He has worked for senators, governors and a President, as well as for non-profits and for-profits in Washington, D.C. and the Kansas City area.

Although no stranger to the credit union industry, he finds the credit union philosophy and business model intriguing. His household of five are all credit union members.

He started his first two weeks as Heartland Credit Union Association’s president/CEO traveling throughout Kansas and Missouri, visiting with HCUA staff and attending board and chapter meetings.

His definition of success for the Heartland Credit Union Association is ensuring that “credit unions are not only surviving, but thriving, and that we are positively impacting the lives of people,” says Brad. “I would also like to see HCUA recognized as the gold standard among leagues within the next five years.”

As HCUA’s newest leader, he believes true leadership goes beyond just setting a vision.

“True leadership is helping to set a strategic vision with goals, and then enabling people and organizations to achieve those goals,” he explains.

Making a difference in people’s lives is important to Brad. He listed “helping people” as one of three traits that defined him, as well as leadership and family. “It’s just the way I’m wired,” says the eldest of four brothers.

He is also a self-proclaimed physical fitness enthusiast.

“Throughout the week I walk, run, swim, and do yoga or pilates,” he says. “I try to work out six days a week. My favorite app is MyFitness Pal.”

Like our Board Spotlight series, Brad was given several questions to answer that will help you get to know him better. Read below to learn more.
