Data Security Bill Moves Forward - Action Still Needed

The House Financial Services Committee voted 45 to 9 to move H.R. 2205, the Data Security Act of 2015, forward to the House floor.

The vote took place on December 9. This bill contains several provisions helpful to the data security issue:

  • More stringent data security standards for merchants
  • Allowing credit unions to disclose and identify to members details of the breach
  • Ensures that one law will provide uniform protections across the country

H.R. 2205 has a companion bill in the U.S. Senate, S. 961, which is sponsored by Missouri U.S. Senator Roy Blunt (R).

Take Action

The Missouri Credit Union Association (MCUA) distributed an action alert on December 8, asking credit union advocates to reach out to House members and share support for this legislation this week. The call to action continues with the entire Missouri House delegation now that the Financial Services Committee has moved the bill forward.
