Springfield Area Credit Unions Meet With Member of Key Committee

The Vice-Chair of the Missouri Senate Financial Institutions Committee met with nearly a dozen credit union leaders in Springfield to talk about issues and concerns affecting credit unions and their members.

Senator Mike Cunningham (R-District 33), joined advocates from BluCurrent Credit Union, CU Community Credit Union, Metro Credit Union, Mid Missouri Credit Union, TelComm Credit Union, and the Missouri Credit Union Association in Springfield on August 24.

"This was a great opportunity to help strengthen our relationship with a key member of the Senate," says Judy Hadsall, president/CEO of CU Community Credit Union, who attended the event. "We shared some ideas about potential legislation for the 2016 session and discussed the important role credit unions play serving the financial needs of our community. Senator Cunningham was very gracious, and we appreciate him taking time out of his schedule to meet with us."

The Senate Financial Institutions Committee handles the majority of bills dealing with financial institutions and is a key committee for credit unions.

In addition to discussing legislative topics, credit union leaders also took the opportunity to share success stories and thank the Senator for his support.

"We want to thank you for consistently introducing legislation that addresses concerns of credit unions and helps them better serve their members," said Johnny O'Hare, President/CEO of Mid Missouri Credit Union, during the meeting.

Cunningham introduced a bill addressing concerns with the Missouri Merchandising Practices Act (SB 489), as well as an electronic lien release bill (SB 291) in the 2015 legislative session. In 2014, he sponsored a bill aimed at preventing frivolous lawsuits from so-called patent trolls (SB 706 in 2014).

According to Project Zip Code, there are more than 8,500 credit union members in Senator Cunningham's District. Here are the top five:

  • Mid Missouri Credit Union - 1,073 members
  • BluCurrent Credit Union - 904 members
  • Metro Credit Union - 707 members
  • CU Community Credit Union - 706 members
  • TelComm Credit Union - 702 members
