Legislative Visits Close Out Annual Advocacy Meeting

Credit union leaders took to the State Capitol to meet with lawmakers during the last day of the Missouri Credit Union Association’s (MCUA) Annual Advocacy Meeting (February 10, 2015).

"Meeting directly with legislators during the Annual Advocacy Meeting provides great exposure for not only credit union issues, but credit unions themselves," says Jason Peach, SVP/CFO of West Community Credit Union. "This event allows for credit union professionals and volunteers to share personal stories and the positive impact credit unions have in the communities that legislators serve as elected officials."

The two-day event focuses entirely on advocacy efforts and meeting with lawmakers in their offices.

A vital part of the Annual Advocacy Meeting is credit union volunteer involvement. Several credit unions, such as Horizon Credit Union (Macon) and First Missouri Credit Union (St. Louis), brought volunteers along to meet with lawmakers. Their perspectives play a key part in sharing their credit unions’ stories with lawmakers.

“Legislative visits provide a unique opportunity for credit unions and volunteers to discuss credit union issues with lawmakers while in their offices,” says Kay Lucas, president/CEO of Horizon Credit Union (Macon). "It's important that we keep lawmakers up-to-date on anything that could impact their constituents and our members."

One of First Missouri Credit Union's volunteers, Pat Yaeger, is a former state legislator.  She knew many current lawmakers and made introductions during the capitol visits.

Lawmakers also shared their interactions with credit union leaders on social media accounts, including Sen. Paul LeVota (D-District 11) and Rep. Sheila Solon (R-District 31).

Credit union advocates provided every lawmaker with the Show-Me Scorecard and a handout on credit union legislative priorities during office visits.  In addition to those individual visits, credit unions leaders were announced and recognized on the floor of both the Missouri Senate and the Missouri House of Representatives.

"Thanks to all of the credit union advocates and volunteers who made the Annual Advocacy Meeting a success," says MCUA President/CEO Don Cohenour.  "I was amazed that when we met with lawmakers to tell our story, what we heard back was their story on how the credit unions have helped them or family members personally.”
