Dave Osborn, CEO, Retires from ABECU

After 39 years in the credit union industry, Dave Osborn has announced his retirement from Anheuser-Busch Employees’ Credit Union (ABECU), effective March 2015. He has led ABECU as the president and chief executive officer (CEO) for the last 23 years.

“I’ll miss the people most of all,” says Osborn. “Anheuser-Busch Employees’ Credit Union has been a rewarding and fun place to work. It will be difficult to leave.”

Under his leadership, ABECU has grown from $253 million in assets with 13 branches to more than $1.4 billion in assets with 30 branches nationwide. Osborn led the addition of ABECU’s American Eagle Credit Union division in 2001 and, most recently, the Purina Credit Union division at the start of 2015.

“Through his dedication to helping our members reach financial success, Dave has led the credit union through landmark growth and success,” says Dan Vogler, executive vice president of ABECU. “We appreciate his leadership, dedication to the communities we serve and development of the credit union’s culture, and he will be missed dearly.”

Prior to ABECU, Osborn worked for several credit unions in his home state of Indiana. After graduating from the University of Georgia with a degree in business, Osborn started work at Indiana Telco Federal Credit Union (Indianapolis) in 1976. Six years later, he accepted the position of CEO for Finance Center Federal Credit Union, which was located at Fort Benjamin Harrison.

When Fort Harrison closed in the early 1990s, Finance Center Federal Credit Union’s potential for growth was severely damaged. Osborn began to search for opportunities outside of Indianapolis, and he found the CEO listing at ABECU. He decided to apply for it, and he was soon offered the job. He joined the credit union as CEO in 1992.

“The position was a step up and had bigger, better opportunities,” says Osborn.

Osborn cites both the biggest challenge and achievement as finding ways to grow ABECU’s membership. For example, in 2006 ABECU merged with Meridian Credit Union (formally St. Louis Telephone Company Credit Union), which brought with it a community field of membership.

“Solidifying that merger with Meridian Credit Union was the best thing to happen to this credit union while I’ve been here,” says Osborn. “It was meaningful to the membership and the sustainability of the organization.”

Osborn stated he was proud of ABECU’s many achievements, most notably the positive work environment. His commitment to employee development and member service led to ABECU being recognized as one of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s 2014 Top Work Places.

“It's deeply satisfying to know that we’re not only taking care of the members, but taking care of our employees,” says Osborn. “You have to take care of your people or they won’t take care of the members.”

As a well-respected leader within the community and industry, Osborn has volunteered his time and shared his expertise serving and leading a number of industry boards of directors including those of the Indiana Corporate Credit Union (vice chairman), Defense Council of Credit Unions (chairman), Missouri Corporate Credit Union (chairman), CO-OP Financial Services (chairman) and the CU Advisory Board for Enterprise Car Services (board member). He is also the recipient of the CO-OP Financial Services 2014 Founders’ Award.

Osborn hopes to stay involved in the credit union industry even in retirement.

“I’ll probably do a little consulting,” says Osborn, adding that he will also be enjoying more time on the golf course.

He and his wife plan on moving back to Indiana, but they intend to come back to St. Louis often to visit their three children and two grandchildren.

ABECU's board of directors has selected Robert (Bob) McKay to take over as CEO on March 1, 2015. McKay was the executive vice president/chief operating officer (EVP/COO) of Illinois-based Baxter Credit Union.

Cards and notes of congratulations may be sent to 1001 Lynch Street, St. Louis, MO 63118.
