St. Louis Chapter Event Brings Lawmakers and Credit Unions Together

Candidates, lawmakers and staff met with credit union leaders at the St. Louis Chapter of Credit Unions annual legislative reception on September 25.   With one-on-one discussions, attendees shared issues of concern on the state level and also laid groundwork for the legislative session ahead in January.

"This event is always an excellent opportunity to thank lawmakers for their support of credit unions," says Laura Alfeldt of First Community Credit Union, who spoke during the event.  "This year - being an election year - we also met with a few state candidates ahead of the November elections.  It's important for credit unions to start developing those relationships now, and to share the credit union difference with future lawmakers."

Approximately 40 representatives from 10 credit unions took part in the event, held at Ameristar Casino in St. Louis.

"Credit union representatives really took advantage of this opportunity to talk with lawmakers and candidates," added Don Cohenour, president/CEO of Missouri Credit Union Association (MCUA).  "They provided them with real world examples of what credit unions are doing in the community, and how credit unions are improving the financial wellbeing of members, who happen to be their constituents as well."

In addition to one-on-one conversations and a welcome by Alfeldt and MCUA President/CEO Don Cohenour, lawmakers also learned more about credit unions with a slide show highlighting credit union facts and achievements in the region.
