Veto Session: Credit Union Leaders Meet with Dozens of Lawmakers & Candidates

In advance of the state veto session, credit union representatives visited with dozens of state lawmakers, candidates and legislative staff while attending nearly 20 receptions hosted by current or newly elected lawmakers.  The receptions – including two at Missouri Credit Union House - took place on September 9 and 10 in Jefferson City.

“We were able to visit with members of House and Senate financial institutions committees, lawmakers from our district, and members of leadership - all in one evening,” says Randy Yeck of Vantage Credit Union, who attended Tuesday’s receptions.  “This was truly a unique opportunity to meet and develop relationships with a variety of key lawmakers in a fun and relaxed setting.”

“The majority of events were all within walking distance of each other,” adds Mike O’Brien of St. Louis Community Credit Union.  “The proximity of each event was a huge advantage and was the reason we were able to meet with so many lawmakers, staff and candidates in a short period of time.”

Credit union representatives also welcomed four lawmakers – including the sitting Speaker of the House and a member of the House Financial Institutions Committee – to Missouri Credit Union House for two different receptions on September 9.  This marked the first time a sitting Speaker of the House has held an event at Missouri Credit Union Association’s (MCUA) Jefferson City office.

“Being the host site for lawmaker events is a very special honor for credit unions and for MCUA,” says Don Cohenour of Missouri Credit Union Association.  “But to have the Speaker of the House and a key committee member hold their event at our Jefferson City location is extra special, and it helps reinforce relationships between credit unions and key lawmakers.”

Events hosted at Credit Union House were on behalf of Reps. Paul Fitzwater (R-District 144) (member of House Financial Institutions Committee), Lyndall Fraker (R-District 137) and Craig Redmon (R-District 4), and Speaker of the House Tim Jones (R-District 110).

In addition to Yeck and O’Brien, participants included Don Cohenour, Amy McLard, David Kent, and Mike Winter with the Missouri Credit Union Association (MCUA).  Rick Nichols of River Region Credit Union participated in a September 11 reception, which was moved due to scheduling conflicts.

Veto session began at noon on September 10.  While no bills specifically targeting credit unions or credit union concerns were expected to be addressed during veto session, Missouri Credit Union Association staff monitored House and Senate actions at the state capitol.
