Youth Week Set to "Catch the $ave Wave" in April

Sunny beaches and rolling waves are a part of this year's theme for the 2014 National Credit Union Youth Week (April 20-26).
Credit unions selected "Catch the $ave Wave" theme from submissions nationwide. Credit unions nationwide are encouraged to join the celebration throughout the month of April or just during National Credit Union Youth Week.

In addition, CUNA recently awarded a financial education course to Central Missouri Community Credit Union (CMCCU) in Warrensburg. To be eligible to win, a credit union had to sign up for the Saving Challenge by January 22.

"We have 900 accounts for members, age 12 and under, so our goal is to add a financial education component for those youth members," said Judy Jett, vice president of Business Development for CMCCU. "Each of our three branches has its own Youth Week and Saving Challenge activities, and we've had great success with youth participating in our bowling and skating parties during Youth Week. I've been with the credit union for 35 years, and even my grandkids have accounts at the credit union!"

It's not too late for your credit union to "Catch the $ave Wave!" Sign up for Youth Week and engage younger members. Encourage them to set up savings accounts, learn how to manage money and be more financially literate.
"National Credit Union Youth Week fits perfectly with the credit union cooperative principle of member education," said Jan Garkey, CUNA's youth week coordinator.
Garkey suggests that credit unions introduce young children to the credit union through regular deposits of their quarters and holding a Mad City Money simulation at a local high school or a parent seminar on how to teach money skills to children.
