Free, Easy-to-Use Social Media Monitoring Tools

Do you know what people are saying about your credit union? It can be difficult to balance running a credit union and monitoring your credit union’s digital reputation. Luckily, there are a number of tools that can help keep you in the loop when it comes to Facebook posts, tweets, YouTube videos and online articles or blog posts.

Below are some of the top social monitoring freebies. 

Google Alerts

Google Alerts is the simplest way to keep tabs on keywords. It’s a snap to set up, and it will deliver any updates directly to a specified email address. Go to this webpage, enter in keywords and select the options most pertinent to your credit union.

For example, MCUA monitors keywords like “Bank On More” and “credit unions in Missouri” and we have all results sent once a day to an MCUA email address.


Mention will change your life. Forgive the slight exaggeration, but it does come in handy when it comes to online publications, Twitter and other public online communications. Start by signing up here

After registering, you’ll have access to all of the pro plan features for 30 days, and after that the account will revert to the free plan, which works just fine. Since Mention is an app, it will need to be installed on a computer, phone or smart device (yes, it works on iOS and Android!). 

After installing the app, you can start to set up alerts for different keyword(s). We have several alerts set up for Bank On MOre and MCUA. When alerts are established, all you have to do is launch the app to see if there has been any activity.


Tweetdeck and HootSuite are two separate social media management tools, but we have grouped them together because they function very similarly. Also, if you use HootSuite, you probably aren’t using Tweetdeck. It’s a one-or-the-other sort of scenario.

You can schedule updates from a number of social media platforms with HootSuite, including Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and LinkedIn. You log into it just like you would Facebook—you can even log in with a personal Facebook account. Once your social networks have been added, you can create streams for each social account. Each stream has a different purpose, like monitoring keywords, home news feed, sent messages and mentions.

There is both a free and paid version of HootSuite. It’s less than $10 a month; it’s ideal for those credit unions who need additional assistance scheduling their social media posts or want more features—like vanity URLs for shortened links.

Tweetdeck is an app for Twitter accounts. It’s a more advanced tool than HootSuite, because it does take a bit more dedication and Twitter knowhow to navigate. There is no limit to the amount of columns that can be added. Similar to HootSuite streams, these columns can be dedicated to specific tasks such as mentions, tweets, interactions, hashtags (aka keywords) and so on.

Social Mention

Think of Social Mention as Google for social media posts. Simply go to the website, type in keywords and it will provide a result list, including posts from YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and so on.

We suggest that you use at least two different tools to monitor your credit union’s online presence. No one (free) tool can catch all online mentions for a singular keyword.
