Don’t Tax My Credit Union Goes Virtual

The Don’t Tax My Credit Union (DTMCU) campaign demonstrates how social media can play an important part in sharing the credit union message with lawmakers. Credit unions, including many in Missouri, have taken the DTMCU message online during events like Don’t Tax Tuesday.

Nationwide, the DTMCU campaign has garnered 900,000 messages to Congress—15,000 of them via social media. In Missouri, a grand total of 13,315 legislative contacts include 12,849 emails, 192 phone calls and 263 tweets (as of September 20).

Making Contact

With Missouri Hike the Hill coming up on October 1-3, and the Missouri Bankers Association heading to Washington at the same time, the Missouri Credit Union Association (MCUA) asks credit unions to keep up the momentum.

Write lawmakers directly by visiting the DTMCU website.

“Even if you have contacted lawmakers before, send a follow up to let them know credit union leaders are headed their way and remind them you are watching their actions regarding credit unions,” says Amy McLard, senior vice president of Advocacy for the Missouri Credit Union Association. “Every individual contact is helpful.”

DTMCU Social Media Outreach

MCUA mailed DTMCU advocacy packets – including a social media schedule for posts and tweets each day – to all member credit unions on September 16. The purpose is to highlight the many things credit unions do to help their members, consumers and communities. This includes community service, member testimonials and financial education – all areas that are important to share with lawmakers.

For example, Arsenal Credit Union took the educational topic and tailored it to reflect their credit union’s activities. See update at right.

For the most impact when posting, tag Missouri’s U.S. Senators and any U.S. Representative who represents your field of membership in the post. Also include #DontTaxMyCU in both Facebook and Twitter. For tips on contacting lawmakers via social media, click here.

September 30 – October 3

From September 30 – October 3, demonstrate your DTMCU support using tweets, pictures, Vine videos, emails and Facebook updates. Share this content with the hashtag #DontTaxMyCU. The advocacy packets included DTMCU signs for each credit union branch, so members and staff can take pictures and videos showing their credit union support.

National Virtual Rally

Credit unions nationwide are invited to participate in a national virtual rally on October 2. Hosted at Credit Union House in Washington, D.C., the rally will be live streamed from 1 - 2 p.m. CST here and on The Hill Newspaper's website. Missouri credit union representatives will be on hand in Washington, D.C. and may appear during the rally. Credit unions that share photos, videos and information with the hashtag #DontTaxMyCU may be included in the coverage.
