Missouri Central Saves the Day—and the Dog!
Credit unions in Missouri are dedicated to the wellbeing of their members, but did you know they also care about their members’ furry pals?

In April 2013, Caryn McManus took her loyal pooch, Winchester “Chester,” to the vet for a routine teeth cleaning. During the cleaning, the vet found a nasty lump on Chester’s gums. A biopsy revealed that the seemingly healthy 5-year-old lab mix had cancer that grows on the bone.
“I took him to a specialist in Kansas,” says Caryn. “I was told that we caught the cancer early, but he was going to get very sick. Unless removed, the cancer was fatal.”
Caryn was devastated. The surgery would cost approximately $2,500 and would require removing the cancer and several teeth.
“Even though my head told me I was crazy to spend that kind of money on a dog,” she shares, “my heart told me if there was a chance to save Chester, I had do something.”
To pay for the procedure, her husband recommended that she take a loan out against their car. So she called Missouri Central Credit Union (MCCU) and talked to Becky Socha, MCCU member service representative. Caryn has been a member of MCCU for 12 years.
“Becky said it would not be a problem and she started to work on the paperwork for me,” says Caryn.
On May 17, 2013, Chester underwent surgery and it went very well. Just two weeks later, the results of the lab work showed that Chester was cancer free!
“My beautiful blonde dog is happy and healthy,” she says. “He doesn’t even notice his four missing teeth!”
Caryn is extremely grateful for MCCU, the Blue Pearl (vet hospital) and Dr. Jeania Beachner, the observant veterinarian who caught the cancer early. Thanks to them, she and Chester have many more happy years ahead of them.
