Missourians Making Contact Regarding Credit Union Tax Status

Lawmakers on Capitol Hill are hearing from credit union staff, volunteers and members in Missouri.  Between May 22 and June 17, Missourians in support of credit unions made 3,727 email contacts to Missouri’s U.S. Senators and Representatives regarding concerns about the credit union tax status. Another 50 people made phone calls through the toll-free number.

The action alert remains in effect and more grassroots contacts are needed as Congress considers tax reform.  On June 13, the Senate Finance Committee released an Options Paper on Tax-Exempt Organizations and Charitable Giving which lists eliminating the credit union tax exemption as an option.  Visit and click on the “Take Action” link.

Credit unions statewide are urged to inform staff and members about the tax status issue.  A wide variety of tools and resources are available in CUNA’s Tax Advocacy Toolkit  and MCUA’s Credit Union Advocates to assist with engaging and activating membership.  The Missouri Credit Union Association can help provide Missouri-personalized articles for newsletters and websites.  A video is also available to use on credit union websites, in lobbies, and for posting in social media.

Positive news about credit union of member and community service is essential.  Please share these stories with MCUA via to help spread the good news.  Include positive news stories in communications with lawmakers and the public via earned and social media.
