Fond Farewell to Leon Kusnetzky
It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Leon G. Kusnetzky. As a long-time champion of credit unions and the credit union movement, he had inspired many within the community. He will be remembered for his commitment and dedication.
Leon's work for and in credit unions dates back to the 1960s. His influence and assistance to improve legislation impacting credit unions in Missouri, credit union bylaws, and the development of CUSOs in Missouri will benefit credit unions for years to come. In addition, he, along with his team at Kusnetzky, Schwartz, Rosenfeld, Sailler & Lilla helped credit unions defend against lawsuits, navigate bankruptcy litigation, set up policies, and analyze contracts. He also worked to help small credit unions in a tough regulatory environment by sponsoring the small credit union CUSO, to help facilitate sharing and support of ideas that help these credit unions serve their individual memberships.
As Brian Eyestone, president/CEO of Southpointe Credit Union and Chair of the Missouri Credit Union Association Board of Directors stated, "Leon will be deeply missed. Few individuals are as dedicated to seeing credit unions in Missouri succeed like Leon was." His unfailing sense of humor encouraged a lighter look at credit unions. He was known for dressing up in costumes and performing in skits at annual meetings and conventions. His humor made many a dark day easier to bear. In 2012, the Missouri Credit Union Association inducted Leon to the Missouri Credit Union Association’s Honor Roll, a distinction given to those people who have gone above and beyond in their service to the credit union movement in Missouri.
For those who wish to pay their respects, Leon's funeral will take place on Friday, May 17, 2013, beginning at 2:30 p.m. at the Louis Memorial Chapel, 6830 Troost Avenue, Kansas City, MO (64131). In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions or memorials be made to the charity of one’s choice.
