U.S. Rep. Ann Wagner Meets Credit Union Leaders in Second District
Just four weeks after being officially sworn into office, Congresswoman Ann Wagner (R-District 2) met with credit union representatives from her district. Fifteen credit union leaders met with Wagner at First Community Credit Union in Chesterfield on January 31.
Wagner was designated as a Credit Union Champion in August and elected in November to her first term in Congress. As a new member of the U.S. House Financial Services Committee, Wagner will focus on issues that are more likely to impact credit unions.
During the meeting, Wagner discussed the federal budget and concerns that will be tackled by the Financial Services Committee, such as housing finance and Dodd-Frank reforms. Credit union attendees expressed the need for regulatory reform and promised to keep Wagner appraised as bills are introduced that would impact credit unions and their members.
“It is clear that Congresswoman Wagner understands credit union issues and concerns,” says Don Cohenour, Missouri Credit Union Association president/CEO. “She recognizes that when Congress acts, it impacts real working families, and we appreciate her focus on consumers and small business owners.”
“As a new Congresswoman, Ann brings a new attitude and direction that I think the country is looking for,” says First Community Credit Union President/CEO Glenn Barks, who hosted the meeting. “She has a commitment to help not only her constituents, but also to champion the credit unions of Missouri.”
Wagner encouraged credit unions to give issues a personal connection when communicating with lawmakers.
“It is very important for you to share stories about the people you serve and how you are helping them,” said Congresswoman Wagner. “That puts a human face on the issues in Congress. You have great stories to tell and are doing tremendous things.”
Representatives from the following organizations participated in the meeting:
Arsenal Credit Union
First Community Credit Union
First Missouri Credit Union
St. Louis Community Credit Union
West Community Credit Union
Missouri Credit Union Association
Missouri credit union leaders will have more opportunities to meet with federal legislators and staff during the Credit Union National Association Governmental Affairs Conference in Washington, D.C., which takes place February 24-28.
