Dave Tate, Retired, Together Credit Union

It's not uncommon for credit union employees to spend their whole career in the industry, impacting the credit unions, members and the movement in significant and meaningful ways. The Hall of Fame award is given to any current credit union employee or retiree (of an Association-affiliated Kansas or Missouri credit union) who has given outstanding lifetime achievement to unite, strengthen and advance the credit union movement.

Dave Tate’s commitment to exceptional member service is his most identifiable and lasting change to unite, strengthen, and advance the credit union movement.

When Dave was hired as member service manager in the early 80s, Together Credit Union had less than 25,000 members. During his 40 years at Together, he made members a priority, and helped grow the organization to 134,000+ members strong. When he retired four decades later as vice president of branch operations, his main focus was still the member.
“Dave always focused on the member and would process decisions with ensuring that the member experience was considered first,” shares Tom Kraus, chief operating officer at Together Credit Union. “This has really helped new employees that were able to see this example in action. He openly shared his understanding of the business and enjoyed helping others.”

While Dave made a tangible impact on the growth and success of the organization, it’s his intangible impact that makes Dave “Hall of Fame” material. Dave’s kindness, professionalism, and humor made everyone around him feel valued and happy and inspired several staff. He expressed gratitude and recognized employees often for their contributions.

“I worked with Dave Tate on the credit union’s pandemic taskforce to ensure the health and safety of our members and employees, “wrote Julie Linder, PR & event strategist at Together. “He was thoughtful in his words and actions and contributed greatly to our efforts.”

Dave lived up to the saying “anyone can be a boss, but it takes someone special to be a leader.” According to Together Credit Union staff, Dave was there to listen, offer advice and be a friend. He led by example, set realistic goals, and encouraged others to use their talents and skills to problem solve in new and innovative ways. He was a mentor and friend to all, and always took the time to share his knowledge and wisdom with others.

He volunteered for community events and was actively involved with Together Credit Union’s annual Day of Giving. Based on the need, you could find him painting, landscaping, cleaning, warehouse sorting, and more. He was always willing to pitch in and help where needed.

He diligently advocated on behalf of credit union employees and members and was actively involved with regional and national programs. During his career, Dave lived the credit union motto of “people helping people.”
