Dot Credit Union Gets Closer to Reality
With the Internet domain landscape getting ready to change, the Missouri Credit Union Association (MCUA) encourages you to take the top-level domain survey at the bottom of this page by Aug. 1, 2013.
Right now you might be asking yourself what we’re talking about. Back in 2011, the Internet Corporation for Names and Numbers (ICANN) announced that it would broaden the number of approved top-level domain names. Currently, there are only a limited number of top-level domains, such as .coop, .org, .com and .edu. However, domains like .bank and .insure are currently in the process of being created.
To ensure that credit unions aren’t left behind, the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) applied for the top-level domain .creditunion last year. They did this with help from CUNA Mutual and COOP Financial Services. Recently, CUNA won preliminary approval for the .creditunion domain.
Having control of this domain name will give the credit union system marketing and Internet security advantages, while avoiding potential abuse issues if it were in the wrong hands.
The new extension is expected to win final approval from ICANN very soon, and the .creditunion domain is projected to go live early next year.
Again, MCUA suggests that you take this survey and register your URL with the new domain. Send any comments or questions to this email. These opportunities for feedback are nonbinding, and CUNA is asking that you express your interest by Aug. 1, 2013.
